The Beaton House by architect Arthur Mudry, 1965
Located in West Vancouver’s coastal forest sits The Beaton House, a rustic, ethereal pavillion styled home that is rooted on a steep cliffside.
West Vancouver heralds some legendary homes from architects like Arthur Erickson, Robert Hassell and Barry Griblin, Ron Thom and countless others.
History buffs and heritage advocated have been working hard to preserve these magnificent homes before its too late. Unfortunately, The Beaton House wasn’t able to be saved. It was demolished in 2018.
Cities are increasing their engineering requirements in the name of “safety”, halting or denying permits and inevitably forcing older architecture to be forgotten and completely destroyed.
On a recent post about The Beaton House, one user wrote “The absurd costs and restrictions are at such a level that it is near impossible to preserve older architecture unless someone has f#%*ku money and the passion to persevere, never see return on the investment. After dealing with two high-end architectural projects in Victoria- both massively compromised due to these forces, I’ve realized that our building environment is so oppressive and illogical, that without a serious reset, there is no room for creatively, innovation, or affordability. It is a straight jacket that will ruin all parts this industry.”
Our hearts are broken for these homes, their histories and architectural legacies that are no longer here to be fully experienced.
