Frank Gehry’s “Easy Edges” Series
Frank Gehry's Easy Edges Furniture Collection is a groundbreaking and iconic series of furniture designs that emerged in the late 1960s and early 70s. Known for his avant-garde architectural designs, Gehry's foray into furniture design gave birth to an entirely new aesthetic, combining the use of unconventional materials with organic shapes.
‘Wiggle’ Chair, 1972
Inspired by using cardboard for architectural models, Gehry began experimenting with the simple material. He found that corrugated cardboard layered enough times in alternate directions was actually quite durable and strong. So he began transforming it into functional pieces of art that were suitable for everyday use. This series is partially the reason why Gehry’s name rose to public recogontion in the early 70s.
‘Wiggle’ Stool, 1972
Gehry's revolutionary approach to construction involved soaking the cardboard sheets in water, bending them into curvaceous shapes, and then binding them together with glue. This innovative technique allowed him to create sculptural furniture pieces that were not only visually appealing but also surprisingly comfortable and functional.

One of the most iconic pieces from the Easy Edges collection is the ‘Wiggle’ chair. Its sinuous form resembles a wave frozen in motion, captivating the eye with its dynamic lines. Despite its delicate appearance, the chair is structurally strong and can support the weight of a person without losing its shape.

Decades after its inception, the Easy Edges collection remains a testament to Gehry's daring creativity and his ability to turn humble materials into extraordinary and timeless designs.
