Renate von Löwis
Renate von Löwis is an artist from Hamburg, Germany. She is largely inspired by Bauhaus design, which she was introduced to as a child by regularly visiting Gustav Beck, an artist and art collector.
Her work features bright extraordinary color combinations while others are more restrained monochromatic designs. “Everything happens, nothing is planned through” and “There is nothing that doesn’t work” are her guiding principles.
Many pieces come to fruition from drawing by hand, or simply from whatever song she is listening to in the moment. Music is a constant influence in her work as she spent many years as a tour manager in the music industry. “While I'm weaving, I always listen to music. The musical styles may differ greatly. I see music as having different colours. For my woven pieces, I often use music to find the colour combinations I want to use.”
Her tapestries refer to the traditional knotting techniques which she interprets through a modern lens. The Ghiordes knot, a 2000-year-old knot is a flat-woven style that she has been inspired by. “My weavings are often woven using a technique that combines flat weave and knotting. The Ghiordes knot, which is many centuries old, has been further developed for this purpose. The knot isn't as rigid since I tie only 20 knots per inch.” Like most artists, she is happiest when she is creating new designs on her looms in her studio in Hamburg.
Since 2011, Renate has exhibited her work in various cities, such as Brussels, Braunschweig, Bielefeld, Stuttgart and Melbourne.
